I make salt glazed pots in porcelain and stoneware, for daily use or as decorative objects. My work is mainly thrown and finished on the potter’s wheel, sometimes later altered and assembled. I strive to make each piece an individual, including when part of a series, such as mugs, bowls or cups.

A graduate of Clay College Stoke, in 2019 I set up my studio in the Weald of Kent, close to the Castle in Sissinghurst. 

During the months of ‘lockdown’ in 2020 I have built a new salt kiln, with the very generous advice and encouragement (safely distanced by phone) of Joe Finch, Walter Keeler, and Steve Harrison; the first a master kiln builder and potter, and the latter both eminent salt-glaze masters. 

In October 2020, I fired the kiln for the first time with very encouraging results.  A salt kiln needs to be ‘seasoned’ before it delivers its best; the initial firings will coat the kiln bricks with layers of glaze that seal them and offers a salt-glaze back onto the pots in future firings. This is a process that develops the complexity of the glaze with further firings.

The new salt kiln has produced some excellent results. The kiln is proving very responsive which is so promising for the firings to come.
